How Obama Playes in Nairobi: Luo Power
March 7, 2007 on 1:22 pm | In obama, Kenya | No CommentsVia Politico’s Globamania article, we find Ugandan Omar Kalinge Nnyago’s column at AllAfrica.com about how Obama’s candidacy could affect Kenyan politics:
I can see my Dholuo [i.e. Luo] friends from Kisumu walking the streets of Nairobi with a gait, with that look on the face that says: “When you refused to let us rule Kenya, we went to rule America”. Obama’s run for the US presidency could be emotive for the African Americans in the US, but could also bring a few revelations on the state of tribal politics in Kenya. I see one or two prominent Kenyan tribes not particularly excited to have a Dholuo at the White House. Only the Pan-Africanists will be elated. To them Obama is not Kenyan. He is African.
